Back to Control Functions.
Origin
DM.73 was a 4-aspect automatic signal commissioned at Swindon MAS Stage 1 on 14 November 1966[1]. At that stage it was supervised by Highworth Junction SB and was the last automatic on the Down Main in the newly-created track circuit block sections between there and Uffington SB.

Movement
The signal was moved forward 115 yards in July 1983 [for what reason?].
Conversion to Controlled
The signal was planned to be moved 150 yards towards Swindon on 7 February 2000 as part of the South Marston commissioning works described in GWS.27. However, due to 'construction difficulties' the work did not take place.
Instead, DM.73 became a controlled signal, SN.998. This took place at 0645 on Sunday 11 June 2000, and the number DM.73 became disused.
Reincarnation
A new DM.73 was later installed in connection with the second attempt to commission the South Marston scheme in 2002, as described in GWS.27.
It was planned to be commissioned on 11 February 2002:
