Origin
UM.72 was a 4-aspect automatic signal commissioned at Swindon MAS Stage 1 on 14 November 1966[1]. At that stage it was supervised by Uffington SB.
Controlled passed to Swindon Panel under Swindon MAS Stage 5 on 3rd March 1968.

Conversion to Automatic
This signal was planned to be "converted to an automatic" (from what?) on 2 August 1970:
But the work did not take place as planned:
and the signal was actually converted to automatic on 6 September of that year.
The signal is shown as already an automatic in the resignalling notice S.2498, so unknown what it was converted to an automatic from...
Alterations in connection with Reversible Signalling
From 6 March 1977 the signal was mounted on a right-hand cantilever, in readiness for the future conversion to controlled (SN.83) and installation of SN.683.
The reversible signalling was brought into use in 1981 [2].

This signal was taken out of use when Bourton Interlocking was commissioned on 1/10/77, as described in the following WON entry:
