Origin
There have been two SN.278s.
The first was a backing signal on the Up Main whose functionality was replaced by SN.662.
It was then reincarnated as the signal protecting the exit from the down siding at Wootton Bassett.
First
The signal existed from the opening of Swindon Panel and was replaced by SN.662 in .
Second
The signal was moved in June 1978, as referred to (incorrectly) in 31/W/2747.
In 2014, has been surveyed to move the signal 10 yards away from the main line in connection with the installation of axle counters. This work had not taken place at the time of writing (December 2014)
