Swindon Junction Station opened in 1842 by the Great Western Railway. The 'Junction' component of the name coming from the divergeance of the line to South Wales via Gloucester, just west of the station.

The station was renamed 'Swindon' in 1861.

The CRS code for Swindon is SWI.
